At a conference (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 2001), Dr Tony Attwood reported that an adult with autism was once asked what his definition of hell was like. ’ Change is indeed difficult for many individuals with autism. When students with autism are suddenly asked, without warning, to move on to a new task or new environment, they may become very anxious. This change in routine may also raise their level of anxiety and lower their ability to concentrate. These students may resist the change by complaining or resist with WHAT CAUSES MISBEHAVIOR IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM?
As teachers, when troublesome behavior occurs, we should ask ourselves the following questions: What happened to the student prior to the misbehavior? Did the behavior occur ‘out of the blue’ or were there any warning signs? Who was with or near the child when the behavior occurred? What skills does the student lack that would enable him to refrain from using the behavior? Is the student using the behavior to get something or escape something? Playing detective can certainly help us discover reasons for problem behaviors that we may not have considered.
Arrange situations for the student where he/she needs to find clues to ascertain how someone is feeling or predict how they will respond. He/she may need to be taught what various facial expressions look like and how various emotions sound in one’s voice as a precursor to being able to find clues. 2.
