As a professor of medicine at the University of Padua Vesalius taught his students that human anatomy can be learned only by direct observation, not from books. In the Fabrica he warned against accepting even his own work as definitive and urged the student to dissect and observe in a critical and objective fashion. In this he showed the true outlook of the scientist, for whom nature, not authoritative texts, is the source of knowledge.
